Energy harvesting solutions for IoT

EnABLES is a European project dedicating to powering the Internet of Things (IoT). It will address the long term needs of energy management in self-powered smart sensor systems as required by IoT innovation. To enable truly ‘invisible’, unobtrusive and self-powered (autonomous) wireless devices a key challenge is to bridge the gap between capturing energy supply from energy harvesting sources (EH), integrating new devices for energy storage (ES) and taking into account the micro-power management (MPM) requirements for the miniaturised system operation. This webinar is centred to the first step: the energy harvesting. We will present the different EH technologies (photovoltaic, thermoelectrics, piezo, etc.) developed in the frame work of this project. We will also present our free-of-charge technical offer to characterize materials or devices in this different EH technologies.

PowerMEMS 2019 Conference – See you there!

Meet us at PowerMEMS!

EnABLES will have a stand at PowerMEMS 2019. PowerMEMS takes place on Monday 2nd to Friday 6th December in Krakow, Poland. There will be a number of EnABLES technical researchers around during this week. Please drop by our stand to see our demos and discuss your powering the IoT needs. We can help on technical matters and on what EnABLES can do for you and how to apply.

If you would like to arrange a specific time to meet up please email Nicolas (nicolas.cordero @ tyndall.ie) in advance.

What’s this paper about?
This paper presents the first comprehensive review on MEMS scale electromagnetic vibration energy harvesters (EMVEH) which are one of the most feasible replacement of batteries for the Wireless Sensor Nodes (WSN) in the present era of ‘Internet of things’. This paper further discusses the ongoing development and the major obstacles in implementation of a high performance MEMS EMVEH and further also provides a potential roadmap for the realization of highly integrated Energy Harvesting unit using Micro/Nano magnetics.
What have you discovered?
Scaling has a detrimental effect on the effectiveness of MEMS Electromagnetic Vibration Energy Harvesters (EM-VEH) which limits the output power to hundreds of picowatt to few nanowatt range, but this paper presents a unique way of addressing this with novel device topologies along with the integration of optimized arrays of micro-patterned magnets that enable the harvester unit to generate substantial amounts of electrical power of 1.25 microwatt in overall thin MEMS structures of EM-VEH by enhancing the associated electromagnetic interaction dramatically, which is conspicuous among the reported Magnetic-MEMS VEH to date.
So what?
Harvesting usable electrical energy from ambient vibration through high performance integrated EMVEH has becomes an attractive and feasible solution to the powering issues of billions of deployed WSNs. This paper proposes a novel device topology for the MEMS Scale EMVEH that will boost the electromagnetic coupling in a small footprint and hence dramatically improve the power outcome of the device which could bring a paradigm shift in the epoch of IoT. Moreover, the unique distribution of optimized micromagnets can be employed in wide range Magnetic MEMS application beyond energy harvesting makes this article stand out among other relevant review reports.
